I'm a parent at Presidio Knolls and recently joined the board, so as you can image, I'm a fan of the place.

I don't speak Chinese, and my wife speaks a little because she lived there for a couple of years as an adult, but she isn't fluent. However, my daughter speaks Chinese fluently (for a three year old!). When playing with her toys, she monologues to herself in Chinese as often as she does in English. She prefers to listen to and sing Chinese songs in the car and at home.

PKS isn't just about learning Chinese though. Ellie loves the school. The teachers in Ellie's classroom are kind and loving. She is always excited to get to school, and it can be hard to pry her away at the end of the day. She has really developed emotionally since she has been at the school. She is a lot more outgoing than she used to be, and has been starting to develop some real empathy for other kids. I don't know if that is just because she is getting older, or if it's a function of the Reggio Emilia inspired approach of PKS, but it is certainly consistent with the school's emphasis on developing "the whole child".

We wanted a program with both language immersion and a progressive "whole child" approach to education rather than the much more rigid, traditional education that we grew up with, with its singular focus on academics. PKS is the school that best fit our needs, and we're very happy that Ellie is here.

We are equally excited about the PKS expansion into an elementary school that is starting in 2012. PKS will accept kids in Kindergarten, First and Second Grade in 2012, and grow one grade level per year until it has a full K-8 program. I'm very happy that Ellie will be able to stay with this the PKS program throughout her elementary and middle school.

We were initiially concerned that Trust Montessori seemed to follow a rigid structure, but our son took to the consistency or the scheduling really quickly and because of the Montessori training provided at Trust, he almost always knew to clean up after he was done playing. The classwork allowed them to play and learn as well as sit through fun classes that taught them all about the earth different animals, trees, space, dinosaurs and so much more.

The teachers were all pretty amazing at keeping the kids engaged and active. While our son spoke Chinese going in to Trust Montessori, the bilingual classes with two teachers per class, gave him a chance to not only further his Chinese vocabulary, but also to become conversant in English without English usage at home, AND, he learned to read before he graduated from their Pre-K program.

The combined usage of plays, singing, playtime and Montessori discipline and structure was a perfect fit for our son. While each child will differ, we saw his entire class grow into the program and excel in so many areas. You should at least tour and explore this school if it is within your criteria.

My son has attended Lingli for 2 years now. I heard about it as it came highly recommended to me by parents I trust. We were very lucky that there was space for my son, but being flexible with scheduling helps too.
The school is moving to a new, bigger location in Mountain View in 2011. Hopefully this will help to meet the demand out there for excellent bilingual preschool/after school care. When the school was home-based it was hard to cater to all the families who wanted to be part of the Lingli experience, even though I know the owner wanted to.
In the past 2 years I have come to love this school. Parents, teachers and the owner are all friendly and there is a real community feel. The children are exposed to Mandarin in a loving, play-based environment. Teachers are native Mandarin speakers but they understand and speak English too.
My son has learnt so much and soon my younger daughter will join the school too. I am very grateful for being part of this community.

Our 5 year old son has attended since Dec. 2008, and our 4 year old daughter has attended since Sep. 2009. They love everything about school: teachers, staff and friends. There is such a wonderful mix of families and children of different backgrounds from each other, and lots of families formed through adoption. The school staff and teachers have been so warm and caring. Our children are speaking Mandarin and learning Chinese culture. We look forward to growing with the school. Anyone looking for a Mandarin Immersion education for their child should definitely look into Shu Ren International School.

I am so proud that my kids attend this school. When you consider how many volunteers it takes to run this school, it's truly remarkable. Such dedication. What I like best is that the school subsidizes some amazing extracurricular elective classes to round out the language education with culture. Kids can take conversation, brush painting, Chinese yo-yo, Martial arts, ping pong, and more. There are also enrichment opportunities for parents, annual carnivals and concerts, parades, contests and other celebrations. CCCS has succeeded in creating a cultural experience. The school is committed to excellence and pays attention to parent concerns, always striving to improve. One of the school's biggest strengths is its diversity in students (kids from Chinese-speaking homes all the way down to kids with no Chinese background at all) ... but this is also one of its largest challenges, for it is difficult to meet the needs of such a wide spectrum of skill levels on such a tight budget. The school offers both traditional and simplified.

My daughter has been at Lingli for many years now - first as a preschool student, then for the past couple of years in their afterschool program. It has been a fantastic place for her to learn and enjoy Chinese language and culture. Even though we speak no Chinese at home, she has become fully fluent in spoken Mandarin, and knows how to read and write many characters as well. Unlike many other programs that have a more rigid, academic approach, Lingli is play-based and developmentally appropriate for young children. My daughter has had so much fun playing with her friends there, all while speaking in Mandarin. I feel like she has been truly loved and nurtured by all the staff.
Their current home-based site is warm and friendly, but they will be expanding this summer to a new school being built especially for their program. To correct some misinformation: Class size is no bigger than 8 (currently only 6 in the afternoons) and the registration fee has been and still is just $30. The waitlist has been long in the past, but only because it is a great program located at a small site - I expect the wait time will shorten once their new school opens this summer. I can't say enough good things about this program - it has been a terrific place for our family.

The teachers are extremely nurturing, and there has been much thought invested in developing a curriculum designed to promote critical thinking through age-appropriate exercises. The academics are excellent in addition to supporting strong social and leadership skills.

My daughter (who started in Nursery and is now in 1st grade) and my son (who started in Nursery and is now in PK) have an impressive mastery of Mandarin despite the fact that we almost exclusively speak English at home. And most importantly, my children genuinely love learning and look forward to going to school.

My daughter has been attending CCA New Sprouts weekend Chinese classes for 2 years now. She really enjoys her classes and attends them with enthusiasm. Over the space of time we have been part of this school, it has very consistently grown and improved. Their Chinese New Year celebration is very special to the children, who seem to love it. For a non-Chinese family like ours, it is a great way to have a New Year celebration and enjoy the associated cultural activities.

Love our school! Principal Hallock's enthusiastic leadership together with her wonderfully capable staff, has produced a program that is international in scope, local in it's sense of community and straight to the heart in terms of how we feel about being there. There is a "can try, can do" attitude here that is rare in public school education today. Did I mention that it's a public school?! Teaching Mandarin, including art, science and music in addition to the excellent focus on core academics. GATE program is also located here, so teachers are great at assessing individual student performance and devising strategies for each student to be successful. Only caveat - two hours of Mandarin daily, so not full immersion, but still achieving great results.
